Perhaps though, this may be a good time to suggest, that in the final analysis, it will be in your Heart where you will be judged and found to be ready or not ready for greater Light in your life. It will not be so much the position you assume for meditation or the place, time, or number of prayers you make or even how perfectly you pray. As an aside however, note that if such considerations (or similar ones) have been a part of your basic beliefs, then, depending on your situation, it may not be wise to turn away from them too quickly (or even at all). It is possible that your practice of them (these considerations), or your lack of practice of them, may be noted by your Higher Self (the part of yourself that is attuned to, and through which you are able to reach that spark of God which lives within you) as an important indicator of your willingness to obey (or not obey) that which has been given to you. In other words, if such practices have been a part of your beliefs and you still are comforted by them, then perhaps you have no need to make a change there. If though, such practices have been a part of your beliefs and they no longer feel right for you, then it may be time for a change. Your own Heart will help you to be the best judge of these things as they affect you personally.
Getting back to the subject at hand however, once you are comfortable, you may find it beneficial to sit with your feet apart on the floor, or on the ground, depending upon where you may be. Many find it additionally beneficial to place their hands, palms down, near each knee. Close your eyes if outside things tend to be distracting. Attempt to empty your mind of all thoughts and ideas. It may sound like a difficult task, and it probably will be until you practice it sufficiently. One should not expect to succeed with the first few attempts. This work is not an overnight task, nor is the work of making oneself Spiritually enlightened. These can be the work of a lifetime, and more. The beauty of it all is that you have available whatever time it takes. That statement, however, should not be taken as an excuse to procrastinate unnecessarily. That would not be wise. It is presumed that you are either a serious Seeker, or you want to be. Otherwise, it is unlikely that you would be here reading this now.
You may want to try any number of different methods of meditation, but it is not really recommended that you change from one method to another and then to still another. It will be better to find a method with which you feel comfortable, and continue with that method. It might help if you just think of the mind as a blank slate, and every time that something appears, mentally erase it. Perhaps you may want to consider setting up a practice of doing this each morning before your normal schedule begins. If your meditation is done with the proper attitude in the Heart, it should not be necessary to meditate more than ten minutes or so each day. Although early morning seems to work best for most people (as stated previously), it may be done at whatever time of day seems best for you. Once you have made that decision, however, it is worthwhile to be consistent.
After a while (it may be days, weeks or even months), you are likely to find that clearing your mind and keeping it relatively clear, are tasks that are no longer so difficult. Once that begins to be a normal part of your meditation, you can just sit quietly during that time and listen receptively. Still later, you may reach the point where you will want to begin your meditation with a question to your Higher Self. This question should not be regarding some idle matter, but should concern something that is more meaningful to you at that time. When you have cleared your mind, you may ask the question, then clear your mind again and listen.
There are some who have found that the Higher Self may have (for those who are patient) many ways of providing a response to their questions. It could come in the form of something in an article from a newspaper or magazine. It might be merely some word, phrase or idea in a movie or television show that will strike a resonant chord within you, so that you know it comes as the answer to your question. Your Higher Self may even bless you by providing a direct response to you in a rather unusual manner. Perhaps you have felt that special "shiver" up and down your spine at some time when you were viewing very beautiful scenery, or listening to especially beautiful music that somehow touched your heart. That "shiver" can also be given to you by your Higher Self (as it has been given to others before you, by their Higher Selves) as a positive response to a "yes or no" question. This great blessing, in time, can eventually evolve to become a response that is given to you in actual words (or even as a complete idea) in the mind, as an answer to any type of question. When you have had the somewhat unsettling experience of receiving the answer to your question even before you finish forming the first word of the question (in thought form, or even aloud), you will begin to have some small inkling of the level of intelligence of Those with Whom you are dealing. Believe me when I tell you that these are blessings that can only be given to those who have shown themselves to be worthy. Even kings, with all their wealth and power, cannot buy such a blessing.
Please remember that you should not allow yourself to get into a hurry about these things. As stated previously, they can take a lifetime and even longer. For now however, you have a life to live each and every day, and there are many more mundane aspects of that life with which you must also, nevertheless, deal. Hopefully however, you will be able to introduce into your everyday living, additional uplifting means of seeking a better way of life. Perhaps among these, if at some time in the future it seems to be the right thing to do, you may want to consider including a daily prayer to ask that you be guided to begin incorporating into your life, the seeking of less and less for self and more and more for service.
When you have approached your period of meditation properly (with the right Heart), and patiently, perhaps a time will come when your meditation, and some of the other aspects of seeking a better way of life that you are trying to follow, can help you to make it through each day a bit more easily. I suspect that not only will that be true, but that there will also be many other benefits that you will find to be both lifelong in their duration and uplifting in their nature. I wish you well in these endeavors.
